Coast Guard, partner agencies conduct full-scale oil spill exercise

WHY: This is an opportunity for partner agencies to come together and walk through the steps of a major oil spill so that if one ever does happen in the Southern California area we are prepared and we know who we will be working with.

“The event not only satisfies federal exercise requirements mandated by the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 but more importantly serves as a forum to educate the community and improve our ability to effectively respond to a pollution scenario off our coveted shoreline,” said Coast Guard Lt. Marie Sevin, the exercise’s planner. “This exercise provides an opportunity for all responders to work together to consult on local issues and improve communications and coordination for potential responses to pollution incidents along the coast.”
Other agencies to be involved in the exercise include: U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Marine Corps, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Environmental Protection Agency, Cal Emergency Management Agency, United States Fish and Wildlife Service, Chevron Shipping Company, Volunteer San Diego Disaster Cadre, Marine Spill Response Corporation, National Response Corporation, San Diego Audubon Society, National Park Service, California State Lands Commission, California Coastal Commission, State of California / Office of Spill Prevention and Response, Clean Islands Council, Titan Salvage, Gulf Agency Co., Southern California Coastal Ocean Observing System (SCCOOS), San Diego Humane Society, City Of Oceanside, City of Carlsbad, City of Encinitas.
