COAST GUARD TO AUGMENT PATROLS SAN DIEGO - A U.S. Coast Guard law enforcement team will augment federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, in Lake Havasu, Ariz., with promoting recreational boating safety during the Spring Break season: March 17-25, 2006. Coast Guard teams will include members of Maritime Safety and Security Team San Diego and Tactical Law Enforcement Team – Pacific, both based at the U.S. Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego. The Coast Guard teams will augment law enforcement by focusing on boaters who are ‘operating under the influence,’ which includes the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. “Alcohol is involved in nearly one-third of all recreational boating fatalities,” said Capt. Charles V. Strangfeld, Commanding Officer, U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Diego. Lake Havasu is an inland federal waterway within Sector’s area of responsibility. “We will be there to promote professional boating operations and support local law enforcement initiatives to provide a safe waterway for the boating public to enjoy,” added Strangfeld. The Coast Guard teams will depart, for Lake Havasu, on Thursday, March 16th. Secondary public affairs contact is Chief Petty Officer Robert K. Lanier, 11th Coast Guard District Public Affairs Office – San Diego, at (619) 278-7022, phone or (619) 247-5064, mobile. |
