Despite heavy weather, Coast Guard medevacs man from cruise ship

****INTERVIEWS AVAILABLE (see below) ****

SAN DIEGO - A crew from Air Station San Diego conducted a medical evacuation of a 88-year-old male last night from the cruise ship Crystal Symphony, 40 miles northwest of La Jolla, Calif.

The intial report from the cruise ship was received by Sector San Diego just after 8:00 p.m. Friday. A Coast Guard flight surgeon determined the man would require a medical evacuation, and crews were dispatched to the location.

An HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station San Diego hoisted the man and a nurse from the ship. The patient was taken to Scripps Hospital in La Jolla.

Boaters are warned to stay in port during the heavy weather this weekend. The high seas, heavy rain and strong wind make rescues more dangerous for boaters and rescue personnel.

The Coast Guard suggests boaters equip their boats with GPS, a marine VHF radio monitoring channel 16, and a 406Mhz Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB), and as a backup precaution, carry a cell phone.

Interviews with today's pilots are available for media interested in discussing heavy weather rescues. Please call Lt. Jeremy Denning at 619 316 4458.
