Overdue Sailing Vessel Located

SAN DIEGO -- The U.S. Coast Guard called off the search for the missing boater in Southern California Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009.

The Coast Guard's search for the missing 45-year-old man who departed the San Diego Yacht Club on Thursday morning and was expected to arrive in Dana Point, Calif., later that night was called off when the Dana Point Harbor Patrol located the sailing vessel Abba Jaba Dad, transiting outside the harbor.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Sector San Diego began searching local marinas after recieving a report from the owner of the sailing vessel at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, stating that his friend Daniel Formica, left the yacht  club on Thursday morning transiting north to Dana Point.

The Coast Guard urges mariners to file a float plan with a family member, friend or marina. A float plan is a detailed description of your trip to include passenger information, vessel description, where you expect to be and when you expect to arrive at your destination.
