Coast Guard intercepts two migrants swimming north from Mexico

SAN DIEGO -- Coast Guard crewmembers from Maritime Safety and Security Team San Diego interdicted two migrants attempting to swim north across the U.S. border this morning.

At about 9:00 a.m. local mariners operating in the area alerted the Coast Guard that the swimmers had crossed into U.S. waters. The crew intercepted two women in wetsuits near the mouth of theTijuana River.

The women were treated for hypothermia due to their prolonged exposure to the water and transported to the Coast Guard's Sector San Diego location, where they were transferred to U.S. Border Patrol agents.

The Coast Guard urges everyone to report suspicious behavior along the coast and waterways to America's Waterway Watch at 877-24WATCH. For more information about AWW go to: http://www.americaswaterwaywatch.org/.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the water temperature near San Diego is 59 degrees. In these conditions, an unprotected person in the water can become unconscious due to hypothermia in as little as an hour.
