Coast Guard Responds to Suspicous Object in the Water
SAN DIEGO - U.S. Coast Guard San Diego Maritime Safety and Security Team (MSST) located a suspicious object eight miles west of Torrey Pines, Calif., this morning.
At about 8:40 a.m. the MSST were conducting a routine patrol and discovered an abandoned fishing net and a box drifting with wires protruding from it.
The MSST quickly established a security perimeter around the object to prevent mariners from transiting through the area.
Members from the FBI Special Agent Bomb Technicians, San Diego Metro Arson Strike Team Explosive Ordinance personnel (MAST EOD), San Diego Lifeguards, and the City of San Diego Ranger/Diver Remote Operated Vehicle team, were transported to the scene onboard the Cutter Haddock.
Once deployed, the ROV determined the object to be safe. It was brought onboard and identified as an instrument package that attaches to a weather balloon.
It is unclear how the object ended up in the ocean.
