Coast Guard conducts medical evacuation

SAN DIEGO -- Coast Guard Sector San Diego received a request from the cruise ship Carnival Splendor to conduct a medical evacuation of a 55-year-old man, off of Point Loma, Calif., early this morning.

At 1:40 a.m. The Coast Guard received the request and diverted a 41-foot rescue boat from Station San Diego to respond.

The crew safely transferred the patient from the cruise ship, and paramedics from the San Diego Fire Department provided medical care on board the rescue boat.

“It was a textbook rescue,” said Lt.j.g. Amanda Sardone, Public Information Officer at Sector San Diego.  “They quickly arrived at the cruise ship’s location and safely transferred the patient, to their vessel.”

The man was transferred to emergency medical service at the Sector San Diego pier and was taken to UCSD Medical Center where he is listed in critical condition

At the time of the medical evacuation winds were 10 knots, seas two to three feet, and the air temperature was 58 degrees.
