Coast Guard responds to diesel spill

SAN DIEGO -- The Coast Guard is currently responding to a report of a diesel sheen in the water two miles southwest off shore near Point Loma.

At 2:30 p.m. it was reported by Coast Guard assets on scene that the sheen was diesel fuel and approximately three quarters of a mile by one quarter of a mile wide, drifting south toward Imperial Beach.

Presently there is a Coast Guard helicopter and a response boat from Sector San Diego on scene with a pollution investigator. The Coast Guard is working closely with the Navy and lifeguards to minimize any environmental impacts.

The diesel fuel is a light fuel that is evaporating quickly.

The diesel spill was initially reported to the National Response Center by the U.S. Navy at approximately 11:50 a.m.

Mariners should report any impacted areas or oil spill sightings to the National Response Center at 1-800-424-8802.

The incident is under investigation.
