UPDATE: Coast Guard continues search for missing mariner

SAN DIEGO -- The Coast Guard continues to search for a missing 40-year-old man who fell overboard from the oil tanker BW Thames approximately 70 miles south of San Diego last night.

The Coast Guard Cutter Sea Otter, an 87-foot patrol boat from Coast Guard Sector San Diego, searched through the night, and early this morning an MH-60J Jayhawk helicopter returned to the search area where the man fell during a ship to ship personnel transfer covering an area of more than 200 square miles.

"Managers of the SKS Sinni express their deep appreciation for the swift actions of the U.S. Coast Guard and for the support of the local response community following this morning's accident,” said  Jim Lawrence, a representative for the SKS Sinni. “The vessel and crew took immediate action when the accident occurred, implementing emergency efforts to search for the victim. The vessel will work with experts and the authorities to determine the cause of the accident."

The ship’s standard practice is to sound the alarm when someone goes overboard and throw life lines, life rings and to immediately initiate a search and make appropriate notifications.

The two ships involved in the personnel transfer were more than 750 feet in length.
