Coast Guard medevacs ailing mariner

SAN DIEGO -- The Coast Guard conducted a medical evacuation of an ill mariner more than 250 miles west of Santa Barbara, Calif., this morning.

Sector San Diego command center received the distress call from the tanker vessel Prisco Elizavita stating that a 46-year-old crewmember was experiencing signs of severe illness.

A Coast Guard flight surgeon was briefed of the ailing crewmember’s condition and made the determination to have him medevaced.

At 9:12 a.m. an MH-60J Jayhawk helicopter from San Diego conducted the medevac of the crewmember. A C-130 Hercules aircraft was also launched from Air Station Sacramento to help locate the vessel and provide coverage during the long range medevac.

The man was hoisted to the helicopter and transported safely to personnel at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in stable condition at 10:00 a.m.
