Coast Guard, Border Patrol intercept suspected migrants

SAN DIEGO A collaborative effort between the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Border Patrol led to the interception of a panga boat in the vicinity of Del Mar, Calif., this morning.

At 3:00 a.m. Sector San Diego received a report from San Clemente Border Patrol of a suspected migrant landing in the vicinity of Dog Beach, Del Mar, and was notified of a panga heading south.

The Coast Guard Cutter Haddock, while on routine patrol, was diverted to intercept the 25-foot blue and white open hull panga with three people on board. The Haddock located the panga approximately three miles west of La Jolla, Calif., and towed it back to Sector.

The Coast Guard transferred custody of the suspected smugglers and panga to U.S. Border Patrol agents.
