Coast Guard, Navy assist crew of sailing vessel

SAN DIEGO — The Coast Guard Cutter Haddock escorted three people safely back to San Diego at 6:00 this morning after a leak in their boat halted their voyage from San Diego to Hawaii Saturday.

A man and two 13-year-old boys were sailing about 190 miles southwest of San Diego aboard the Nordic Light, a 61-foot sailboat, when they reported via satellite phone that the vessel was taking on water at 7:50 p.m.

A Coast Guard MH-60J Jayhawk helicopter was launched from Sector San Diego to respond and a C-130 Hercules plane was launched from Air Station Sacramento to provide coverage during the incident.

The helicopter crew arrived on scene at 9:30 p.m. and established communication with the people on board.

The U.S.S. McClusky, a Navy frigate operating in the area, launched a small boat with a team aboard to assist the sailboat crew with dewatering and repairing the vessel.

After the repairs were made the McClusky escorted the Nordic Light toward San Diego, where the Haddock took over and escorted the sailboat into the bay.
