Coast Guard assists flooding vessel

SAN DIEGO —The Coast Guard assisted three people in returning safely to San Diego Sunday evening after their 24-foot boat began flooding 20 miles southwest of Point Loma.

A nearby boater reported to Coast Guard Sector San Diego that the vessel was flooding at 6:30 p.m. An MH-60J Jayhawk helicopter was launched from Sector and the Coast Guard Cutter Edisto was diverted to assist the people on the flooding vessel.

Once on scene, the helicopter crew lowered a pump to the vessel to assist in dewatering. The Edisto also launched a boat with an assistance team aboard to control the flooding and stabilize the vessel.

Once stabilized, the Edisto towed the boat to San Diego, where it was handed over to a commercial towing company.
