Coast Guard rescues 3 from disabled vessel

SAN DIEGO — Crews from Coast Guard Sector San Diego rescued three people after their 21-foot boat became disabled 27 miles southwest of San Diego Monday night.

Shortly after 10 p.m., an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew spotted the boat displaying a distress signal flag and waving their arms. The helicopter crew could not establish radio communication with the people on the boat.

A 33-foot rescue boat was launched from Sector to respond. Arriving on scene around 12:30 a.m., the Coast Guard crew determined that the boat was disabled and the people aboard were experiencing severe sea sickness and dehydration.

The sea state was too great to tow the vessel, so the three people were taken aboard the Coast Guard boat and transported to Shelter Island, where they were transferred to Emergency Medical personnel in good condition.

The owner of the boat is coordinating with a commercial salvage company to recover the disabled vessel.
