Coast Guard, partner agencies search for possible survivors after boat capsizes SAN DIEGO — The Coast Guard responded to a report of an overturned boat with an unknown number of suspected illegal migrants aboard just off of Torrey Pines State Park this morning. Customs and Border Protection, San Diego Fire and Rescue, San Diego Police Department, San Diego Lifeguards, and San Diego Sheriff's Department also responded to assist with the search.
As of 7:30 a.m., Customs and Border Protection has reported that a total of 15 people are accounted for. Six of the people are in the hospital and nine have been taken into custody. The search continues for any more missing passengers.
"Attempting to enter the United States illegally is inherently dangerous and is made much more so when done on overloaded vessels without proper communications and safety gear. Navigating a vessel through a surf zone at night without lighting or proper vessel design is irresponsible and likely to result in this type of mishap. The quick arrival on scene by San Diego first responders saved several lives this morning, which is a testament to their training and preparation. This is the third event in as many weeks endangering lives at sea and resulting in people being hospitalized. It is fortunate for all involved that Department of Homeland Security officers were in a position to detect this mishap and quickly called the San Diego Police, Life Guards, and Fire Department," said Capt. Thomas Farris, commander of Coast Guard Sector San Diego.
