COAST GUARD SUSPENDS SEARCH FOR MISSING FISHERMAN

SAN DIEGO - The Coast Guard suspended the search for a fishing vessel and its two-person crew this morning.

The more than 24-hour search was suspended at 9:30 a.m., today.

The operator of the fishing vessel Gina Lisa, Vito Romani, 45, and his un-related crewman, whose name is being withheld until next-of-kin notification, are still missing.

"The Coast Guard suspended the search this morning after an exhaustive effort with multiple assets," said Cmdr Sean Mahoney, U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Diego's Response Officer.  "We searched more than 270 square miles of ocean, with assets searching 1,900 track miles."

The search for the two men began at approximately 8 a.m., Sunday, when the Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) signal from the Gina Lisa was activated.

Coast Guard Sector San Diego launched an HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and dispatched the 87-foot Coast Guard cutter Haddock to search an area located 30 miles southwest of Point Loma, Calif.  A Coast Guard C-130 airplane, from Air Station Sacramento, and the U.S. Navy vessel, USS Ingraham, also participated in the search.

The USCGC Haddock search throughout the night, and was joined by a Sector San Diego Jayhawk helicopter at 6:15 this morning.
