COAST GUARD MEDEVACS POSSIBLE STROKE VICTIM FROM CRUISE SHIP SAN DIEGO - The U.S. Coast Guard is en route, today, to medically evacuate a possible stroke victim from a cruise ship. Coast Guard Sector San Diego received a 7 p.m. call, today, from the cruise ship Paradise, reporting a 77-year-old female suffered a possible stroke. Paradise is 30 nautical miles south of Point Loma, Calif., and is headed north to decrease recovery time. A Coast Guard Sector San Diego HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter returned to base, from a routine patrol, to pick up a San Diego STAR Paramedic for assistance with the medical evacuation. The Coast Guard plan is to recover the patient and transport her to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, Calif. This is the Coast Guard's second medical evacuation, today, from the cruise ship Paradise. Earlier, the Coast Guard recovered a 43-year-old female who partially severed her fingers. While conducting that operation, a 79-year-old male suffered a heart attack. The two patients and a nurse, from the cruise ship, were taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla. Information from those cases can be found at http://www.uscgsandiego.com/external/index.cfm?cid=830&fuseaction=EXTERNAL.docview&documentID=59661. For more information, contact Petty Officer Robert K.
