SAN DIEGO – Coast Guard and San Diego Harbor Police crews responded to a vessel that ran aground and was taking on water near South Coronado Island, Mexico, with 26 people aboard early Friday morning.
Coast Guard Sector San Diego received a mayday call from the 62-foot commercial vessel, Sea Adventure II, at approximately 1:20 a.m., stating that they had run aground and were taking on water at an unknown rate.
An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter launched from Sector San Diego, and the Coast Guard Cutter Edisto was diverted to respond.
San Diego Harbor Police also launched a response boat to aid the rescue efforts. Two mariners who were operating in the area also responded to the scene to assist.
Once on scene, Harbor Police transferred 21 passengers and one crewmember to the Edisto.
A rescue and assistance team from the Edisto went aboard the Sea Adventure II with an additional dewatering pump to remove water from the flooding boat.
It was determined that the dewatering pumps onboard the Sea Adventure II were able to keep up with the flooding. Four crewmembers of the commercial boat and three Edisto crewmembers remained aboard to make the 15-mile transit back to San Diego, escorted by the Harbor Police boat and the Edisto.
As of 5:30 a.m., the Edisto, Harbor Police and commercial vessel are headed to H and M Landing in San Diego, with an estimated arrival of 7:30 a.m.
Initial reports indicate no pollution as a result of the vessel grounding.
