SAN DIEGO – Coast Guard investigators are looking into the circumstances surrounding a charter fishing vessel running aground early Friday morning.

The 62-foot vessel, Sea Adventure II, ran aground near the Coronado Islands, Mexico, with 26 people aboard and began to take on water due to hull damage.

Coast Guard crews worked with San Diego Harbor police to transport all the passengers and crew back to San Diego, as well as escort the damaged boat to a salvage facility.

Field sobriety tests of the crew came back negative (sober), and drug tests are pending.

Coast Guard investigators also interviewed crewmembers of the charter boat and examined damage caused by the grounding.

Initial reports indicated no pollution due to the grounding, which happened 13 miles south of San Diego in Mexican waters. Mexican authorities have been notified of the incident.

The investigation is ongoing into the cause of the vessel grounding.
