SAN DIEGO-BASED COAST GUARD PARTICIPATES IN "I LOVE A CLEAN SAN DIEGO'S" 3RD ANNUAL CREEK TO BAY CLEANUP

San Diego-based Coast Guard men and women traded in their cutters and small boats for kayaks, Saturday, April 9, 2005, as they participated in 'I Love A Clean San Diego's' 3rd annual Creek to Bay Cleanup.

The Coast Guard contingent, which included some family members, removed debris from an area near the J Street Marina in Chula Vista, Calif. Some members walked the water line while others used kayaks to remove trash and debris from hard-to-reach areas. Last year, the Coast Guard clean an area near Chollas Creek in San Diego.

In the first two years of the cleanup, nearly 4,000 volunteers throughout San Diego County joined in to play a direct and important role in reducing the amount of debris in and around coastal and inland waterways. Volunteers removed more than 200,000 pounds of trash and recyclables, covering 75 miles of San Diego's coastal and inland waterways.

This is not the first time San Diego-based Coast Guard men and women have participated in environmental efforts to clean San Diego waterways. Last year, more than 50 Coast Guard men and women volunteered for San Diego's Operation Clean Sweep.

"Operation Clean Sweep brings together a cross-section of San Diego Bay users and businesses in a positive effort to improve this precious natural resource," said Adm. Paul Speer, Chairman of the Board of Port Commissioners. "The event serves as an annual reminder that we all have a responsibility to use San Diego Bay responsibly."

Lt. j.g. Apryl Pidding is the San Diego Sea Partners Unit Coordinator for Sector San Diego. Her efforts have coordinated active duty, reserve and Auxiliary Coast Guard members. The Creek to Bay Cleanup is one of four events Lt. j.g. Pidding is coordinating. Her Coast Guard contingent will also participate in May's Kid's Ocean Cleanup Day, June's Operation Clean Sweep, and September's California Coastal Cleanup Day.
