COAST GUARD CREWS RETRUN FROM ASSISTING WITH HURRICANE RELIEF EFFORTS

SAN DIEGO - A San Diego-based Coast Guard patrol boat crew returned from New Orleans, Saturday, after assisting with Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.

The crew operated the 179-foot, USCGC Shamal, allowing their permanent crew time to deal with their own personal disaster recovery.

The San Diego-based Coast Guard crew was made up of members of the USCGCs Monsoon and Zephyr, which were both commissioned at Naval Station Coronado, Calif., approximately one year ago.

During their 25 days aboard Shamal, the crew conducted martime law enforcement operations allowing waterways to open for commerce, and patrolled critical infrastructures to assist with oil production.

To interview a member of the Coast Guard crew, contact Lt. j.g. Jared Trusz, Executive Officer, USCGC Zephyr, at (619) 571-6568.
