Coast Guard takes 2 turtles to the skies

Story by Petty Officer Allyson E.T. Conroy

The Coast Guard is known for saving multiple human lives every day. They have even been known to save deer from the ice and dogs from the water. On this particular day, though, the crewmembers of Air Station Sacramento did not necessarily pull two sea turtles from the frigid waters off the Oregon Coast, but they were just as instrumental in their survival.

Two sea turtles, an Olive Ridley named Myrtle, and a Pacific green named Maud, were transported from the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport, Ore., to the care of SeaWorld experts Thursday, Jan. 28, 2009. To accomplish this task multiple government agencies worked together to relocate them more than 1,000 miles. The Fish and Wildlife Service coordinated the transportation with the Department of Homeland Security to use a Coast Guard C-130 Hercules plane from Sacramento, Ca., and fly the turtles to a Department of Defense Naval airfield in San Diego.

The aquarium provided the initial care of the turtles after they were rescued in November. Myrtle was found on Agate beach near Newport and Maude was picked up in Long Beach, Wa. After their initial rescue the two were transported to the Oregon Coast Aquarium where they were triaged and stabilized before their long journey south.

“We had permitted the aquarium to provide care, and transport the turtles for return to the wild,” said Laura L. Todd of the Fish and Wildlife Service in Newport. Before the turtles could be returned to their natural habitat, Todd said the two would require a great deal more care, care that required experts at a place like SeaWorld. The next step was getting the two turtles to Southern California.

Todd said various methods of transportation were considered to relocate Myrtle and Maude, the names given to the turtles that are suspected to be female. That’s when the Coast Guard was called to help.

“We received the request for assistance earlier in the month, but we were unable to support this mission until recently due to other operations,” said Cmdr. Todd Lightle, the assistant operations officer of Air Station Sacramento. “The flexibility of the Department of Interior allowed us to pair this important environmental mission with a more routine training mission. The crew overall received a very well rounded experience. The pilots were exposed to a new airport, and the crew was exposed to the unique challenges of loading marine wildlife.”

“This particular mission demonstrates the versatility of the Coast Guard and its assets,” said Lt. Cmdr. Wess Hester. “Just last week members of this aircrew were on another mission bringing relief supplies to Haiti. This week they are helping to save the lives of two turtles.”

The aircrew took off from Sacramento just after 8 a.m., and flew to Newport to pick up the precious cargo. Finally in the early afternoon, the C-130 touched down at Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego

“They didn’t really like the flight at all,” said Gary Gamer, president and CEO of the Oregon Coast Aquarium. He said Maud, the larger green sea turtle, moved around in her crate through the entire flight. But the crew from the aquarium and the C-130 aircrew constantly checked up on the two to make sure they as comfortable as possible, he said.

Almost as soon as the plane touched down, a SeaWorld truck backed to the plane and the turtles were carefully moved to their next mode of transportation, and the last leg of their journey.

Tim Downing, the assistant currier of the fish department at SeaWorld, was on hand to help transport the turtles. He said these turtles are native to the Pacific waters and tend to feed off the waters of Mexico and Southern California. However, with the warmer waters brought in with the El Nino weather patterns, they suspect the turtles probably got caught in some warm water patches and the jet stream carried them further north than they are used to.

“They have been known to swim as far north as the Northwest, but by summer they generally turn around and head back south,” Downing said.

Maude and Myrtle will spend the next several months with the caregivers at SeaWorld while they are rehabilitated. Downing said it is uncertain how long it will take for them to be at full strength, but the turtles will stay put at least until the waters off Southern California warm up a little bit. And it might be a little bit longer than that.

“There are a couple of turtles we have had here for more than a year,” he said. “We want to make sure they will survive before sending them back out into the wild. We believe these two might be females, therefore it will be very important to get them back to their environment so they can have babies and hopefully help increase the turtle population. ”

At the end of a long day and an even longer journey, the turtles finally said good-bye to their Oregon Coast Aquarium lifesavers, and their Coast Guard aircrew as they took to the comfort of their respective tubs of water. That night, Downing said they would feast on shrimp and begin their road to recovery.

SAN DIEGO — The Coast Guard assisted the U.S. Department of the Interior with transferring two endangered turtles from Newport, Ore., to SeaWorld in San Diego Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010.

The Coast Guard received a request from the Fish and Wildlife Service in Newport to help transport an Olive ridley and a Pacific green sea turtle that were both rescued in November 2009. The ridley sea turtle is listed as endangered and all sea turtles are considered to be threatened.

The C-130 Hercules airplane left Sacramento, Calif., just after 8 a.m., landed in Newport and then flew to San Diego where it landed at Naval Air Station North Island. After landing, the turtles were moved from the C-130 to a SeaWorld truck and taken to SeaWorld, where they will be rehabilitated and released back into the wild.

According to the Fish and Wildlife Service both turtles were in severe thermal shock when they were rescued from near lethal temperatures. They were taken to the Oregon Coast Aquarium, where they have been cared for since their rescue. However, the care the turtles will need to be fully rehabilitated and sent to the wild will be better received at Sea World due to the facilities there.

“We have pursued other methods of transporting the turtles to San Diego, but are concerned about exposing the turtles to any cold conditions,” said Laura L. Todd of the Fish and Wildlife Service. “The Coast Guard offers the most efficient and safest conditions for this transfer.”

The air station was able to schedule transporting the turtles to coincide with a training flight. The request for transportation had come in earlier, but due to the high level of operations at the air station, the crew had to put off scheduling it until this week.

"This is a wonderful opportunity to work with a number of different agencies for a great cause," said Lt. Justin Cassell, a pilot from Air Station Sacramento. "The Coast Guard has 11 missions, one of which encompasses environmental protection. What better way to help the animals of the environment than to ensure they get where they need to be. The Coast Guard is honored to be able to take part in such an amazing mission."

“The Aquarium’s role in the sea turtles’ rehabilitation has been triage, urgent care and stabilization,” said Jim Burke, the Director of Animal Husbandry at the Oregon Coast Aquarium. “Ideally, once rehabilitation is complete, they will be released into their natural habitat. It has been a tremendous learning experience for new staff and a good refresher for experienced staff members. These are both female turtles, and if we can get them back into the wild, it will benefit the endangered populations of sea turtles.”

MIAMI—The San Diego-based Coast Guard Cutter Hamilton is supporting humanitarian efforts in Haiti by providing logistical and command support for relief operations.

The 378-foot cutter was underway in the Eastern Pacific Ocean when an earthquake devastated Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Jan. 12, 2010. Hamilton’s crew was ordered to sail through the Panama Canal to the Caribbean the following day.

During the transit through the canal, crewmembers worked overtime to ensure the crew and ship were prepared to assist with relief efforts.

"Hamilton's crew responded to the news of our re-tasking in support of disaster relief with professionalism and flexibility,” said Cmdr. Douglas Goodwin, Hamilton's executive officer.

Coast Guard helicopters are using Hamilton as a refueling hub to speed the transport of injured people from Port Au Prince to nearby hospitals.

"At-sea refueling operations onboard Hamilton allow H-60 helicopters to remain on scene longer to help with relief efforts and not require a long transit back to refuel, " said Lt. Kraig Jones, pilot and assistant public affairs officer for Air Station Clearwater.

Hamilton was commissioned in 1967 is the oldest of twelve 378-foot High Endurance Cutters. The crew routinely patrols throughout the Pacific Ocean conducting maritime safety, security, mobility and national defense missions.

SAN DIEGO - Helicopter crews from Coast Guard Sector San Diego were busy conducting two separate medical evacuations Friday, Jan 22, 2010.

The first medevac was of a U.S. citizen from Bahia de Gonzaga, Baja California, Mexico, Friday afternoon.

The Coast Guard was notified of the 67-year-old man's condition through the
Binational Emergency Medical Care Committee (BEMCC). A Coast Guard Flight surgeon was briefed and recommended an immediate medevac due to his potentially life threatening condition.

Just before noon Friday, an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter was launched from San Diego to conduct the medevac, and a C-130 Hercules plane from Air Station Sacramento supported the mission by providing long-range coverage.

The crew hoisted the man and safely transported him to Yuma Regional Medical Center, Yuma, Ariz., shortly after 6 p.m., where he was listed in stable condition.

The second medevac was of a passenger from a cruise ship 55 miles south of Point Loma, Calif., Friday night.

The Coast Guard received a call from the crew of the cruise ship, Maasdam, at 11:27 p.m., stating that an 86-year-old woman was suffering from internal bleeding and requested a medical evacuation.
UPDATE: Boaters, beach goers urged to exercise caution during upcoming storms

SAN DIEGO — The U.S. Coast Guard continues to urge mariners and beach goers to exercise caution when venturing out during the week's storms, as the National Weather Service has issued an urgent marine weather statement for Southern California warning of gale force winds and hazardous seas to continue through the weekend.

The fourth and perhaps the strongest of the storms is expected to impact waters from San Mateo Point, Calif., to the Mexican border extending west 60 miles. The storms have already caused severe flooding of the Tijuana River prompting an early morning search for three people who were swept away in the fast-moving current.

According to the NWS, a rare storm surge is expected to raise the risk of coastal flooding. The potential for coastal flooding will be greater today and Friday when the storm surge is expected to be higher due to the combination of:

*High Surf with 15-20 foot breakers
*Strong south to Southwest winds of 25-35 miles per hour with gusts more than 50
       miles per hour at times
     *High tides nearing five feet.

Boaters are urged to stay docked in harbor when these conditions are present. If it is necessary to get underway, mariners are urged to check that all of their safety equipment is on board and in good condition.

There should be a personal flotation device onboard for each person, sized accordingly. If boaters will be traveling offshore, it is strongly recommended that there be an immersion suit or other full-body protection, as water temperatures will be cold, and hypothermia can quickly overtake the average person.

Mariners should check current and forecasted weather conditions prior to getting underway, and remain aware of changing conditions once on the water. The National Weather Service broadcasts weather conditions throughout the day on VHF channel WX2. The Coast Guard broadcasts weather conditions on VHF channel 22A at 9:30 a.m., noon, and 4:30 p.m.

The Coast Guard strongly recommends that people avoid going near beaches or other low-lying coastal areas, especially jetties and rocky areas. Large waves can quickly and unexpectedly sweep a person from these areas. Even the strongest swimmers can quickly be overtaken by the power of the sea, especially when cold-water temperatures are factored in.

For more information on boating safety and required and recommended safety equipment, please visit www.uscgboating.org.

For more information on weather conditions, please visit www.weather.gov.

Boaters, beach goers urged to exercise caution during upcoming storms

SAN DIEGO — The U.S. Coast Guard is urging mariners and beach goers to exercise caution when venturing out during the coming week's storms, as the National Weather Service has issued a small craft advisory and marine weather statement for Southern California.

A series of storms is forecast for this week, beginning Monday morning and peaking Thursday evening. The storms are expected to produce long-period northwest swells up to 15 feet and gale force winds, resulting in rough, confused seas. There is also potential for thunderstorms and waterspouts. Boaters are urged to stay docked in harbor when these conditions are present.

The Coast Guard strongly recommends that people avoid going near beaches or other low-lying coastal areas, especially jetties and rocky areas. Large waves can quickly and unexpectedly sweep a person from these areas. Even the strongest swimmers can quickly be overtaken by the power of the sea, especially when the cold water temperatures are factored in.

Though the large waves can be an extreme sight to some, the Coast Guard, along with its partner state and local agencies, urge people to not go near these areas if at all possible. The risk to life is too great during conditions such as these.

For more information on boating safety and required and recommended safety equipment, please visit www.uscgboating.org.

For more information on weather conditions, please visit www.weather.gov.
