Captain Sean M. Mahoney

Captain Sean Mahoney is Captain of the Port of San Diego, and Commander of Coast Guard Sector San Diego. As Captain of the Port, he is responsible for the safe conduct of commercial maritime and recreational boating activity on all federally navigable waterways within an area that extends from 200 nautical miles offshore San Diego, then east to include the Colorado River and its surrounding lakes in Arizona and portions of Utah and Nevada. Additionally, he oversees maritime facility compliance with safety and security requirements, and pollution prevention laws and regulations. He is the designated Federal Maritime Security Coordinator for the region. He also serves as the Federal On Scene Coordinator, responsible for maritime pollution response. As the Sector Commander, he oversees 465 personnel and air and surface assets that carry out a wide variety of Coast Guard missions. 

A native of Fishkill, New York, Captain Mahoney is a 1987 graduate of the US Coast Guard Academy, where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Government.  His first assignment was aboard the USCGC MORGENTHAU in Alameda, California. After gaining two years of afloat experience, he attended US Navy Flight School in Pensacola, Florida.  In 1991 Captain Mahoney reported to Air Station Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where he flew H-3 and H-60 helicopters and served as the H-60 Standardization Officer. From 1995 to 1998, he was assigned as an Exchange Officer to the Canadian Forces with 442 Squadron in Comox B.C., where he piloted the CH-113 Labrador helicopter and served as the Squadron Operations Officer. He was then assigned to Air Station Astoria, Oregon, where he served as a Flight Examiner and Air Operations Officer.

From 2002 to 2005 Captain Mahoney served as the Response Officer at Sector San Diego.  He was then assigned as the Sector Logistics Officer for two years.  In 2007, he completed the US Marine Corps Command and Staff College Distance Education Program and was assigned as the Commanding Officer of Air Station Houston, Texas, where he oversaw the unit’s urgent response to Hurricane IKE. Captain Mahoney served as the Chief of External Affairs at Coast Guard Atlantic Area from 2009 to 2010.  He was then assigned as Chief of the Fifth District Incident Management Branch, where he led Search and Rescue and Crisis Management in the mid-Atlantic region. He took Command of Sector San Diego in 2011.    

Captain Mahoney's personal decorations include four Meritorious Service Medals, the Air Medal, three Commendation Medals, and a Commandant’s Letter of Commendation. He is married to the former Christine Di Pietro of East Fishkill, New York. They have two daughters, Tara and Chiara.
